Huge Luxury
It’s imposing, luxurious and has a boot big enough to carry several bodies. The Lincoln Continental was a big statement, whether you were a mob boss or a US President, and the swankiest of all was the Town Car. The crime spec black paint certainly conjures images of well dressed men eating spaghetti and fitting concrete boots to once loyal soldiers, but these days an annual visit to Beach Hop is probably more likely. Turners Hamilton are auctioning this sinister example. Read on...
The Lincoln Continental might be most famous as the car in which John F Kennedy was shot in 1963. That 1961 Continental was blue, had an open roof section and was not armoured. As a result of JFK’s untimely demise, that very car was recommissioned with a permanent roof, fully armoured and painted black before being returned to the White House (weighing a portly 4500kgs) where it remained in service until 1977.
1977 just happens to be the year this car was built by Lincoln. It’s a Town Car showing 43,000 miles and is fitted with a 6.5L V8 that delivers less than exciting performance but is smooth and quiet, which is the point, really. 1977 was also the first year of the Rolls Royce styled grill and being a Town Car it is fitted with cute little oval ‘opera’ windows in the C-pillars.
If you used the Continental as your daily driver the fuel costs might necessitate the removal of food from your lifestyle. But as an occasional weekend car to take to shows, the odd movement of unfortunate souls or just a nice Sunday cruise, this slice of 70s American luxury could be just what you need. Just measure your garage first.
The auction takes place on 25th July with and auction estimate of $34,500 - $35,500. More details here.
