Big Hair and Shoulder Pads Required - 9th February, 2016
The SL class Mercs have always been a favourite of wealthy scenesters and movie stars since they first appeared in 1954 with the gorgeous (and insanely valuable) SL300 Gullwing. This NZ new 500SL from 1993 may not command the massive money of the early cars just yet but surely that’s a good reason to get in now. With an auction estimate of just $6900-$8900 the only way must surely be up.
Many people will tell you that investing in old cars is a mugs game, but with interest rates at all-time lows and world stock markets retreating what else are you going to do with your money? Mercedes SL convertibles have always been popular classics and prices for early models make Auckland house prices seem affordable. Even the seventies and early 80s models cost more now than they did when they were new. So following that logic this 1993 SL500 with its, at the time, show-stopping 5L, 322hp V8, fully automatic convertible roof, roll bar and a hardtop for winter should start to appreciate like a once unloved but now up and coming Auckland suburb.
This particular car ticks all the boxes for the canny long term investor. It’s the top of the range model, has very low kilometres for the year and looks to be in very good nick. And then there’s that auction estimate - $6900-$8900. Let’s face it, even if you have no interest in it as a future earner it’s just good value as a daily driver. Just fluff up your perm, pull those shoulder pads and the Alanis Morissette cassette out of the closet and pretend you’re Brandon or Brenda from Beverley Hills 90210.
Be quick though, the auction is tomorrow (10th Feb) at Turners Penrose. More details here.
