Lawson finalist in Halberg awards for Best Sporting Moment
Liam Lawson's drive into world championship points at the 2023 Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix has earned him a finalist spot for New Zealand's Favourite Sporting Moment at upcoming Halberg Awards.
The 21-year-old Kiwi made his F1 debut as a substitute for the injured Daniel Ricciardo at AlphaTauri last year and turned in an impressive five GPs for the team with his highlight a 9th place finish at Singapore.
"It's an honour to be nominated. It was an incredible season to be able to race in Formula 1 and to score points in Singapore was a special moment," said Lawson.
Not only did the Red Bull reserve driver score points in just his third outing in an F1 car, Lawson's performance was the best ever by a rookie driver on the Marina Bay Street Circuit, where he also out-qualified world champion Max Verstappen.
Lawson is currently at home in New Zealand before he returns to Europe early next month to prepare for the upcoming F1 season. He'll remain reserve driver for both Oracle Red Bull Racing and the soon to be renamed AlphaTauri team.
The ten best sporting moments to make the final selection cover a wide range of activities with Lawson up against plays from golfer Ryan Fox and All Black Sam Whitlock to team moments from the Warriors and the Black Caps.
Public voting decides the winner and votes can be cast online at the Halberg Awards website right up until the live announcement at the 61st ISPS Handa Halberg Awards on the evening of February 14th.
